CHAPTER TWELVE
WARD
Something old, and something new.
That thought ran through my mind as my eyes roamed around Erin’s bedroom and spotted something from when she was a wee lass, then something I had never seen before. The balance was perfect: the Erin I once knew filled the small space, but so did the Erin I was getting to know.
The open door of her bedroom had caught my eye just as I was about to descend the stairs after leaving the bathroom. I wasn’t sure why it made me pause, and I was confused further when my feet moved and I found myself inside her room. I wasn’t a nosy person – I cherished my privacy, and the privacy of others – but Erin was an enigma to me.
I had been around her for a week, and even though we spoke more and more every day, I wasn’t close to scratching the surface of who she was as a person. I had never been so completely immersed and interested in someone as I was with Erin, and if I was being honest with myself, it terrified me.
My only experience with women was bedding them and then walking away. I never made promises or let silly notions take root in a woman’s heart. I never searched for romance because it never interested me. It had never presented itself to me in my thirty years on this earth, and I found it laughable that the feelings I had been experiencing since I returned to Scotland were textbook romantic ones. Because I was physically attracted to and emotionally interested in a woman who had to train herself to tolerate my presence.
It was a joke, and I was the punchline.
I shook my head, placed my hands on my hips and wondered how I had gone from zero to one hundred where Erin was concerned. Since my return, I’d looked past her physical beauty and seen how pure her heart was, and how mean her bite could be when she was protecting the people she loved most. She was a good lass, someone who deserved the world and then some, but she wasn’t someone who needed the world. She just needed her family, her friends . . . people she could count on.
I was desperately trying to be someone she could put into that category.
“What are you doin’ in my room, Ward Buckley?”
I jumped about a foot in the air, spun around and lifted my hand to my chest where my heart was beating like a drum.
“You nearly gave me a heart attack, Erin!”
Her lips twitched as she folded her arms under her ample breasts, and she waited for an answer to her question.
I gathered my bearings and straightened. “I’m sorry, this is horribly rude of me.”
“It is,” she agreed.
“I didnae mean to barge in here . . . I just . . . I just wanted to see.”
“See what?”
“Part of you.”
I spoke the words before I realised what I was saying, and Erin froze. She looked shocked, confused and, dare I say, interested.
